LIVING HEALTHY CAN BE DELICIOUS AND FUN!
Wellness in the Schools (WITS) inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life for kids in public schools. Through meaningful public/private partnerships with school leadership, teachers, chefs, coaches, parents and kids, WITS develops and implements programs that provide healthy foods, healthy environments and opportunities for regular play to help kids learn and grow. Both PS 145 and West Prep have partnered with WITS to make our West 105th Street Magnet Campus a healthy place for all children.
Our Students Reaping the Benefits of Healthy Eating
Every other month, our restaurant partner Henry Rinehart (owner of Henry's Restaurant) rolls up his sleeves alongside his fantastic restaurant staff to bring our students WITS Café Day. The highlighted ingredient is showcased after the students work with it themselves during the semester's WITS Labs. Our students have taken ownership of this special event and assist in the serving of the food.
Our very own WITS Chef leads our WITS Labs, seasonal culinary and nutrition education classes for students in WITS schools. In the Labs, students prepare the simple, affordable, and healthy recipes that they will then experience at lunch.
The sessions introduce students to the importance of healthy eating and seasonal ingredients, inspiring them to share their newly acquired knowledge with their families. Programs like these have been shown to positively influence children’s food preferences and behaviors, according to recent studies.
WITS Play Days
Throughout the year, we offer WITS Play Days, unique activity days where WITS Coaches and WITS Fitness Partners teach students new games and fitness skills. These experiences engage students in the recess yard, encouraging even the least active kids to play in a safe and encouraging environment.
Family Fitness Fun Night
During Family Fitness Fun Night (FFFN), students and their families participate in exciting fitness classes led by WITS Coaches and WITS Fitness Partners (e.g. yoga, Zumba, and soccer). Complete with a complimentary healthy Chop’t Creative Salad Company dinner and water donated by Mountain Valley Spring Water, FFFNs provide an opportunity for the entire family to come together in a fun and festive atmosphere. Each school is offered one FFFN per semester.
